 Ways to help your child practice their words. 

Help your child listen for the vowel sounds in their words. (we use apple for a, echo for e, itch for i, octopus for o , and up for u)

Help them recognize the family patterns. (-at family,-ig family...)

Use whiteboards to practice words.

Say the word, use it in a sentence, and say the word again.

Use letter cards and have your child manipulate the letters in the rightwi order.

Each week a "Star Word" will be our bonus word focus!

the, in, he, is, be, or, but, of, for, with, this, by, what, and, you, was, as, from, one, all, a, that, on, they, I, had, were, to, it, are, at, have, not, when

 

 

 

 By the end of the year your child needs to be able to spell the following words from The Star Word  - Rebecca Sitton's Word List.  These words are located in your child's homework folder in the plastic sheet.  Practice them through out the year.  We will assess your child at least 3 times during the year.

  • Blue Consonants / Red Vowels

 Letter Patterns in First Grade:

  • CVC - Cat, dog, pin, ten, hut
  • CCVC - ship, that, chin, when
  • CVCC - bush, math
  • CVCE - bike, make, joke, mule
  • CV - be, so
  • CVVC - boat, team, pail, feet
